Bizen-yaki Oval Plate
Hidasuki is a traditional technique of wrapping rice straw around pieces before firing, which produces striking scarlet lines in the finished work. Fired at high temperatures without glaze, the pieces are protected from direct heat by being placed inside protective boxes, resulting in pale surfaces contrasted by vibrant scarlet markings where the rice straw burns at different temperatures.
These variables in the creation processâthe unique clay composition, hand-formed, extended firing time, placement within the kiln, and distinctive firing techniquesâ result in each piece looking unique.Â
